Homelessness Prevention

They love each other and their home. Don’t make them leave it.

Why Prevention?

The San Joaquin County Office of Education reported that 5,785 students experienced homelessness at some point during the 2022-2023 school year. Children experiencing homelessness become sick 2 times more often than other children. They experience twice as many ear infections, have 4 times the rate of asthma, and are 2.5 times more likely to experience anxiety or depression. Children remaining in their home not only helps with their physical health but with their mental and emotional health as well.

In 2022, the average estimated cost per person experiencing homelessness in San Joaquin County was between $56,800 and $69,100 (Click here to read the SJC 2022 Cost of Homelessness Report). A couple hundred dollars can be the difference between a family being able to stay in their home or becoming unhoused. Not only do Prevention Programs help protect children from potential traumas, but they save the community 10 times the amount it would cost to support them if they became homeless.

Do I Qualify?

  • Are you a San Joaquin County resident that has children 0-18 (or is pregnant)?
  • Have you received a notice (3-day pay or quit, 10-day notice, eviction notice, etc.)?

If you answered yes to the above questions, you may qualify for rental assistance or funding for unpaid utility bills to help keep you in your home.
